英国2枚組CD　VOICES OF THE UK: Accents and Dialects of English

「Voices of the UK: Accents and Dialects of English」
というCDを買いました。

あのカールマルクスも通い詰め、資本論の抜き書きをしたと言われる大英図書館。
その大英図書館にサウンドアーカイブとして保管されている
イギリス全土のイギリス人のアクセントや方言の録音コレクションをイングランド、ウェールズ、
スコットランド、北部アイルランドの地域別にまとめた 2枚組みのCDです。

これを聞くとイギリスという国が、各地方ごとに独自の歴史を有した
豊かな地域を持っていることにすぐ気付かされます。

下手な音楽CDを聞いているよりもこの言語調査の産物であるCDを聞く方が
断然たのしいです！！

おおざっぱに言って
CD1は1870年代～1900年代生まれの田舎の人たち、
CD2は1910年代～1980年代生まれの都会の人たちの声が録音されているのですが
CD1なんか、
ところどころ単語は聞こえますが、
とても英語とは思えません！

人によっては、聴きやすい人も多少はいましたが、
ほとんどの人の話が聞き取れませんでした。

英語のヒアリングの勉強という意味では、
これは聞いても、時間の無駄ですね。
さすがにここまで訛っている人は、
今のイギリスにはもういないでしょう（笑い）

また、いたとしても
もう今から耳を慣らしても全然間にあわないと思います。

この CD1はもっと英語が上達してから
さらに幅を広げる場合に聴いていこうと思いました。

5年後ぐらいに僕の英語が完成するとき、
このCD1が最終仕上げの教材になるでしょう（笑い）

彼ら/彼女らのしゃべり方は
誰かに似ているなと思っていたんですが、
すぐにわかりました。

ウィンストン・チャーチルです。
チャーチルはまさに 1874年に僕が今度行くオックスフォードシャーで生れています！

ちょうどこのCD1に録音されている人達は
1870年～1900年代生まれですから、
チャーチルと同時代に生まれた人たちですよね！

この英語はチャーチル世代の人たちの
しゃべり方だったのです！

もうこの CD1の中の人達はこの世にいないはずなんですが、
昔のイギリスの英語はこんなだったんですね～
びっくりしました。

まあ、1874年というと、
日本では明治7年ですから、
日本語だって今の僕らは全然聞き取れないかもしれませんよね（笑い）

CD1は農夫が多かったので、
録音の中で牛や動物が時々鳴いていたりするのも、
なんだか嬉しかったですよ～♪
それから、1916年、17年、18年なんて録音もたくさんありました。
100年近く前ですよ。

ノイズがザーザー入っていて、
ノイズの向こうから聞こえてくる当時の
イギリスの人達の声が
なんだかノスタルジックな感じでこれもまた良かったです。

反面、CD2は、
録音もほとんど、1989年、1999年のものでクリアでしたし、
都会の人たちが多かったのでかなり聞き取りやすかったです。
CD2は、現代のイギリス人の多様なアクセントに耳慣れる意味で
即役立つと思いました。

両方の CDとも、
だいたい1人約1分間ぐらいづつで収録されています。
古今、市井のいろんなイギリス人の
いろんなしゃべり方、アクセント、方言、
そして色々な考え方や色々な出来事などを
一気に聴く事が出来たので、
心なしか、生きている英語に慣れた感じもします。
非常に有意義な時間でした。

このCD、素敵なCDですね！
英語学習を続ける限り、聞いていきたいと思います。

I bought a CD called "Voices of the UK: Accents and Dialects of English." The British Library is the place where the great Karl Marx spent a great deal of time to collect information and published "Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy." The double CD edition which contains the recording collections of all British accents and dialects of whole of U.K by region such as England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, is kept in this particular library.

By listening to this, it makes me realise that Great Britain has many regions which is old and rich in histories that are respected by each regions. It is more enjoyable listening to this CD which consists of linguistic surveys than some vain music!

Roughly speaking, CD 1 includes voices of rural people who were born from in the 1870's to the 1900's, and CD 2 includes urban people's born from in the 1910's to the 1980's. I can pick up only a few words recorded in CD 1, which doesn't seem to have been recorded in English. Although I could understand a few people, most of the words were too hard for me to catch.

In terms of the purpose for English study, it's a waste of time to listen to this CD. There should be no people who have such strong accents in Britain today! If there were, I wouldn't have enough time to get my ears adjusted to their accents.

I have decided to listen to the first CD after my English skills improved, to broaden my skills further. I believe that this first CD will be the last material for leaning English, when my English becomes perfect in 5 years.

I thought that their way of speaking was similar to someone, and I immediately realised who it was. It was Winston Chuchill's way of talking. He was born in 1874 in Oxfordshire where I am going to visit this time. Those people whose voices were recorded in the first CD, were born in between 1870 and 1900, which is around the time Churchil was born. This was the way English was spoken by Chuchil's generation. Those people, whose voices were recorded in the first CD, no longer exist in this world. I am surprised to hear that English was spoken this way in England in old days. We might not understand their Japanese back in 1874 which is Meiji 7 in Japanese calendar.

A lot of voices of farmers' were recorded in CD 1/the first CD. It was nice to hear some mooing and cries of other animals occasionally in the recording. There were many recorded sounds from 1916, 1917 and 1918 as well. These have been recorded approximately a hundred years ago. These sounds include some white noise from old recording equipment. It was also nice to hear the voices spoken by British at the time, which come from behind the noise, and seems somewhat nostalgic.

On the contrary, CD 2 has clear sounds because this is recorded in 1989 or 1999 and is spoken mostly by urban people.I think the CD 2 is instantly useful to get used to various accents of modern British.

Both CDs are recorded for about a minute per person. Various Britain who live and had lived in the UK of all ages have various way of speaking and thinking, accents, dialects and experiences. Since I could listen to all of them, I feel somewhat accustomed to living English. I had a great time listeing to them.

How fine these CDs are! I'd like to listen to them as long as I study English.
