最近、仕事と英語だけの生活を送っています（笑い）

英語は、

来年1月に参加する Open University のレジデンシャルスクールまでに、
ネイティブ達と英語で対等に渡り合える状態にしなければ
ならないので必死です！
　

先日のオンラインワークショップでは
ネイティブたちの英語のスピードが速すぎて
ほとんど聞き取れなかったので、
最近、Windows Media Playerの倍速機能を使って、
英語の速聴に取り組んでいます。

毎週届く The Economistの中から、
読みたい記事を 5、6個ピックアップして
音声ファイルをダウンロードしています。

このプロの英国人アナウンサーが
クイーンズイングリッシュで
読み上げる音声ファイルを
僕は 1.8倍速で再生して
雑誌の活字を目で追いながら聴いてるんです。

いろいろな速度を試したのですが、
1.6倍速ですと、ハッキリ聞き取れてしまいますし、
2倍速ですと、まったく聞き取れません。
現時点での結論は、

僕のリスニング力ですと、1.8倍がベストでした。
1.8倍の速度なら集中すれば
何とか聞き取れるという絶妙な速度なんです！

ここ 1ヶ月くらい続けてますけど、
だいぶリスニング力がついてきました。

ついでに The Economistだけじゃなく、
マッカーサー元帥の退任演説も聴いちゃってます（笑い）
この演説はアナウンサーのしゃべりも超カッコイイし、
議場の拍手や雰囲気も最高で、
聴いているとワクワクして嬉しくなってきます。

I have spent most of the time in doing my job and studying English in recent days. In other words, this is the simple life I have been always seeking for, though.

Regarding my English study, I am now making desperate efforts so that I can communicate and have a discussion on an equal footing (language-wise) with other British participants at the Open University Residential School which I am supposed to join in January next year.

In the online workshop the other day, I was almost unable to catch their conversation because they spoke very fast. So I am working on "speed listening" recently, using the double speed playback feature of Windows Media Player.

I pick up several audio files which I choose from The Economist articles I receive once a week and download these sound files. I play these audio files which are read out by professional British announcers who accurately speak Queen's English and listen to them at a speed of 1.8 times faster than normal while reading the text.

I tried to listen at various types of speed but I was able to understand what was read at the speed of 1.6 times faster completely. I was not able to catch what was read at a double speed at all. At present, I came to the conclusion that I was able to hear the articles at 1.8 times faster than normal better than any other speed. This is the perfect speed which I can somehow follow if I concentrate on listening.

Since I have continued this practice for approx. a month, my listening skills have improved.

"If you try (to do anything), you can make it. But if you don't try, you can't. You can't accomplish anything unless you try."

By the way, I'm listening not only to the Economist's audio files but also "Douglas MacArthur's Farewell Address to Congress." I get excited and pleased while listening to this address because the announcer's voice is cool. And the enthusiastic applause and the atmosphere of the Congress are fantastic. What's more, MacArthur himself is manly.
