台湾で、世界中で「英語はマナー」

先日、Hさんが台湾へ行って、
この言葉を聞いてきたそうです。

台湾というと、歴史的にも、そして
東日本大震災の多額の義援金集めでもわかるように、
たいへんな親日国家です。

その錯覚から、
「日本語OK」みたいなイメージがあるんですが、
現地で台湾人と一緒に行動した Hさん曰く、
「第２外国語は日本語ではなく英語」だそうです。
「若い台湾人、日本語はまったく話せない」そうです。

現地で聞いた言葉が
「英語はマナー」だそうです。

シンガポールという小国が、
"リンガフランカ（共通言語）"として英語で多民族国家を
まとめあげたように、
もはやこのグローバル時代では世界各国で
英語がマナーになったようです。

The other day Mr. H told me that he heard this phrase in Formosa, Taiwan. Talking of Formosa, it is an extremely pro-Japanese country as we can tell from the history and a large amount of public donation for the Great East Japan Earthquake. This phrase strongly encouraged me since I'm studying English now the hardest ever in my life.

From this illusion, we have an image which Formosa people can speak Japanese well. However Mr. H who went along with them there says, "The second language is English," and he also says, "Young Formosa people can't speak any Japanese at all."

He heard the phrase, "Speaking English is a manner."

As a small country, Singapore, united their multiracial state by using English as lingua franca, which means the common language, it seems that using English already became a manner in countries around the world.

P.S. The pineapple cakes that is Mr. H's souvenir was very delicious! My turn is next, and I'm going to Shanghai this evening!
